Adult Foster Homes Adult foster homes are private residences licensed to provide care to five, or fewer, residents. They offer room and board and personal care, from a caregiver in the home, 24 hours a day. Planned activities are available, as is medication management. Some adult foster homes provide transportation services, private rooms, or nursing services.
Adult foster homes serve a wide variety of residents, from those who need only room and board and minimal personal assistance, to those residents who need full personal care and skilled nursing tasks. The care provided depends on the client's needs and the skills, abilities, and training of the provider. Adult foster homes are inspected, licensed and monitored by the state, or by the local Area Agency on Aging.

Nursing Facilities Nursing facilities provide nursing care on a 24-hour basis in a more institutional environment. They provide skilled care, rehabilitation, and end-of-life care. Nursing facilities are required to have licensed nursing staff in the facility 24 hours per day. Many residents have medical and behavioral needs that cannot be met in other care settings. Nursing facilities are inspected, licensed and monitored by the state, in compliance with both state and federal regulations.

Hospices A hospice provides special care designed to give comfort and support to patients and their families when a life-limiting illness no longer responds to cure-oriented treatments. Hospice care neither prolongs life nor hastens death. Hospice staff and volunteers offer specialized knowledge of medical care, including pain management. The goal of hospice care is to improve the quality of a patient's last days by offering comfort and dignity. Hospice care is provided by a team-oriented group of specially trained professionals, volunteers and family members.
Hospices address all symptoms of a disease, with special emphasis on controlling a patient's pain and discomfort. Hospices deal with the emotional, social and spiritual impact diseases have on the patient and the patient's family and friends, and they offer a variety of bereavement and counseling services to families before, and after, a patient's death.
